Martin Lister is Emeritus Professor of Visual Culture at the University of the West of England and an editor of the internationally peer reviewed journal Photographies. He has been involved in understanding the photographic image in digital culture since the early 1990s and has a longer history of interest and study of the work of photography and visual culture. He has a wide experience of photography education and of academic peer review in the subject. He has an international reputation and has taught widely and acted as a consultant in universities throughout Europe and the USA.
Lister was the head of the School of Critical Studies at Newport School of Art and Design (1992-95) where he was part of the team who developed and led the first degree programme in interactive arts. Lister was head of the School of Cultural Studies at UWE, Bristol between 1997and 2006. He is an editor and an author of two highly influential books. One, widely acclaimed as having seminal status, on the relationship of photography to technology and culture, The Photographic Image in Digital Culture (Routledge, first edition 1995 and 2nd edition 2013) and the worldwide academic bestseller, New Media: A Critical Introduction (Routledge first edition 2003 and 2nd edition 2009), as well as numerous articles and book chapters.
