Introduction to Image Datasets

CSNI researcher Nicolas MalevĂ© has published “An Introduction to Image Datasets” for The Photographer’s Gallery’s Unthinking Photography platform. It presents some key concepts and questions that make the computer vision dataset an object of concern for photographic practitioners and institutions.

“The scale of contemporary datasets, the speed at which they need to be produced, the specific ways of seeing they impose onto the annotators, the uncritical recycling of taxonomies and the treatment of the photograph as an object that can represent categories are among the major factors that generate tensions in the learning of vision.”

This essay also provides conceptual background to his earlier work Exhibiting ImageNet, exhibited online and on the Media Wall. See https://www.centreforthestudyof.net/2019/08/exhibiting-imagenet/.
