Joshua Magor

Filmmaker & Lecturer in Film Practice at LSBU

Joshua Magor is a South African filmmaker and educator currently based in London. He holds an MA (Hons) in Economics and English Literature from the University of Edinburgh and an MA in Filmmaking from The London Film School.

His work explores the intersection between non-fiction modalities and traditional forms of narrative cinema. His films have shown at numerous international film festivals and have screened at institutions such as the Barbican Centre in London, the Chicago Cultural Centre and the Tatham Art Gallery in South Africa. As a director his debut feature film Siyabonga made its world premiere in the main competition of the 71st Locarno Film Festival and went on to play extensively around the world at cinemas, film festivals and art galleries. To date the film has won 8 awards and received over 80 nominations internationally. Joshua is a Berlinale Talents alum and in 2019 was endorsed by Art Council England as an exceptional talent in Film and Television. He is the co-founder of the media production company Other People which he runs with Korean-American artist and filmmaker Michelle Cho.

In addition to his teaching on the BA Film Practice degree at London South Bank University, Joshua is a Visiting Lecturer at The London Film School on the MA Filmmaking program.

Research interests include: media anthropology, hybrid cinema, forensic approaches to images and sound, phenomenology, spatial systems, time-based practice, machine vision, collective experience, statecraft, territory and the possibilities of film form.
